How Do You Know Your Child Needs Glasses?

At 39DollarGlasses, we know the importance of seeing clearly, especially for children. Reading, writing, learning, and playing are all acts that can be hindered when a child has poor vision. Parents often wonder – how do you know when your child needs glasses?

Facts About First Exams:

  • According to the American Optometric Association, infants should receive their first comprehensive vision assessment at 6 months old.
  • An additional eye exam should be completed at three years old.
  • Children should have their eyes examined once more just before they start kindergarten.

Signs Your Child Needs Glasses:

  • Rubbing their eyes – If you notice your child excessively rubbing their eyes it could be an indication of eyestrain.
  • Sitting closely to the television – This is typically a sign of nearsightedness. Nearsightedness (Myopia) – Nearsightedness, or myopia, as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred.

  • Squinting – Squinting may indicate a lazy eye and should be examined by an optometrist. Children who squint may be nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism.
  • Losing place while reading – If a child is skipping lines, losing their place, dislikes reading or has a lower attention span for reading it may be due to eyestrain.
  • Closing or covering one eye while reading or watching television – If a child is having difficulty seeing then they may cover or close their eye to help adjust their vision.  

Additional possible signs:

  • While it would not necessary indicate nearsightedness or farsightedness, a child tilting their head could mean they need glasses.
  • If a child gets tired easily – could be a result of eyestrain.
